MCAD is pleased to present Aribert Munzner: Teacher, Colleague, Artist, a limited edition book about one of the MCAD community’s most active and beloved (and dare we say, cosmic) members. Hard-cover, Smythe-sewn, with color plates of the artist’s work, the 64-page book represents Volume 1, Number 1 in MCAD’s new Emeritus Faculty Series. It was designed by Adjunct Faculty member and DesignWorks Director, Pamela Arnold, and edited by Adjunct Faculty member and alumnae, Lynn Golberstein, MFA ’96.

Like the cosmos he paints, artist Aribert Munzner radiates energy, energy that has stimulated his viewers, students, friends, and colleagues for the better part of a half-century. Ari looks at the world and sees objects made of atoms in motion, connected to everything else by “spider webs of energy.” His person epitomizes the way he sees the world, always in motion, full of energy. His diminutive stature is only discernable in the abstract because he constantly emits quanta that occupy whatever space he traverses, causing us to feel his presence as enormous and encompassing.

From the time he was appointed to the faculty of Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1955, he engaged in “non-teaching,” instead, coaching students into fulfilling their own visions as artists and creative beings. Ari says that his job as a teacher is to serve as a mirror, a hidden source of energy. By the time he retired as Professor of Visual Studies in 1993, Ari had helped hundreds of students find their individual voices as artists. As Professor Emeritus he continues to mentor MCAD graduate students between the long hours he spends in his studio pursuing his lifelong investigation into the theme of Genesis, of beginnings, in his painting, drawings and digital art.

Munzner’s paintings, his celebrations of life, have been exhibited in individual shows at Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Tweed Museum, Duluth, Minnesota; Gilman Gallery, Chicago; North Carolina School of Arts, Winston-Salem; New Acquisitions Gallery, Syracuse, New York; and Intermedia Arts Gallery, Minneapolis. He is represented by the Dolly Fiterman Gallery, Minneapolis. He was the first artist Fiterman exhibited when she opened her gallery in 1976 and, most recently, hosted a ten year retrospective of his work in 1999.
